Spreading Environmental Awareness
Local Legislation:
Rhode Island -- Fighting to ban a class of Toxic Flame Retardants from children's products and furniture. This included a letter campaign where Clean Water Action representatives hand deliver them to our State Representatives in order to give individual voices more power.
Massachusetts -- Renewable Energy Campaign working to incentivize Congress to invest tax payer money into locally produced renewable energy, rather than sending the money to out of state fossil fuel companies. Stemming off of the Omnibus Bill passed in 2016, which commits Massachusetts to using more of off-shore Wind and Solar Energy, this bill would push Representatives further into budgeting for renewable energy and infrastructure, and not from natural gas or coal. It would also incentivize companies to be greener by taxing carbon at its source.
National Legislation:
On a national level, the campaign Clean Water Action is focused on is the Clean Water Rule. As of February the new administration signed an executive order repealing one third of our nation's protections on seasonal rivers and streams. The loss of these protections means that major watersheds will be affected if there are no protections in place to stop pollution, and no funding to check for contamination.
