Political Campaign Work
At Clean Water Action, when a representative seat is available the environmental organization
can endorse a candidate that is committed to social and environmental justice issues.
During my internship I was able to politically campaign for a candidate in Newport, Dawn Euer, who is a huge environmental advocate, helped pass the marriage equality act here in Rhode Island, and helped improve bike paths in Newport.
My responsibility, along with the usual fundraising, was to assess and advocate political support in the involved districts which were Newport and Jamestown. The information gathered was used to help progress the campaign and to gauge support.
Overall, this was an informative experience for me because it helped me gain insight into grassroots campaign work
and how it operates. It also demonstrated how the democratic process occurs on a local level which is not as commonly mentioned compared to national campaigns. Doing political campaign work allowed me, as a Sociologist, to see how individuals respond to elections in their area, and issues they felt passionately about in their communities. I would love to be able to continue becoming involved in grass-roots political campaign work in the future, specifically for a candidate that promotes social equality, and environmental protections.
